( whenever he decides to look at this video, there is a close up of a striped shirt for a few seconds. the person backs away from the webcam and it appears to be maka. her hair down and wearing her pajamas. she takes a seat on her computer chair and smiles brightly. and just when he probably thinks she's going to speak, she starts doing hand gestures: )

'Hello. I've been studying sign language this entire week. I've been studying non-stop and checking out a lot of books. I think I've got it down pretty good.'

( there's a pause as she thinks. )

'But I'm sure there's still some phrases I don't know? Anyway, I just wanted to surprise you. So... surprise!!'

( she giggles and then leans forward to stop the recording. )

[Whatever Nicolas was expecting when he played the message, it definitely wasn't this. Certainly Maka wasn't the first person he'd met who'd learned to sign because of him, not even the first to surprise him with it. (Though, Alex's hadn't been quite as good at the time. Still, she tried.) What he's more surprised by is how quickly she'd picked it up. Not only had they only just met recently, but it definitely wasn't an easy thing to learn so quickly. Apparently Maka was a quick study! Nic's definitely impressed.]

[Of course, since he is who he is, he's not going to say that. Of course, if Maka looks closely in the video response she gets back, she'll definitely see a subtle pleased smile on Nic's face. He even makes an effort to sign slower than he normally would to make sure Maka can catch all of it.]

Your form needs work.
But it's not bad for a beginner, I guess.

I can see where you're hesitating, anyone would be able to tell that you just started learning.

Once you get better there shouldn't be any pauses except where there needs to be.

[He didn't want this oh my god. He can figure out well enough that this is from that flashy guy that Maka seemed to know. He had made a conscious decision to try to avoid him if at all possible. He knows if the kid is a friend of Maka's they're bound to cross paths eventually.

Might as well get the relationship off to a bad start. So Black☆Star will find one of his "autographs" returned to his mailbox, with a short message scrawled across the bottom in messy handwriting:
