History:
Abbreviated version courtesy of wiki
Nicolas Brown was born from a union between an anonymous prostitute and Gaston Brown, captain of the Westgate Mercenary Troops. The woman was what is called a twilight, a person suffering from a sort of congenital disorder caused by a certain drug, Celebre. People with this disorder are called are generally treated as inferior beings, required to wear dog tags to identify themselves and restricted to live within a certain area. Twilights, or Tagged, as they are colloquially known, are born with superior physical strength, but in contrast often suffer other physical and mental defects (for example, Nicolas is deaf), as well as a dependence on the drug Celebre. Most of them require daily doses of it to stay healthy, and even then, most twilights do not live past their thirties. Gaston killed the woman upon discovering she was a twilight, and took Nicolas in, intending to profit off of his skills if he managed to reach adulthood. The dose of Celebre that he gives Nicolas as a child is low, keeping him subdued and weakened by mild withdrawal symptoms so that he remains obedient. Nicolas learns to fight from a young age, and is considered part of the mercenary group. He is treated poorly by his father and other members of the group because they view him as sub-human and know he won’t fight back.
The Westgate mercenaries are on retainer to the Arcangelo family, and around the time Nicolas is 10-12, he is assigned to be the personal bodyguard for the son of the head of the family, Wallace. Wallace is a year older than Nicolas. Wallace is cold to Nicolas at first, but the two end up becoming friends. Wallace teaches Nicolas to read and write, and later the two learn sign language together. Wallace, though he is the oldest child in the family, is illegitimate, and is treated harshly and beaten by his father, usually when he is drunk. At some point, when anti-twilight protesters start to become violent, the government drafts mercenary groups to quell the uprising, including the Westgate mercenaries. Nicolas goes with them, despite Wallace’s protests. Nicolas survives though he is badly injured. Shortly after, Nicolas collapses, due to his wounds from the uprising becoming infected, and the doctor informs Wallace that Nicolas is a twilight. Wallace reacts poorly, insisting that Nicolas isn’t like some monster, and the doctor insists that the best that can be done is to keep him on Celebre, but twilights “don’t strive to live long lives,” and Nicolas’s father knows this. Shortly thereafter, The Westgate mercenaries are dispatched by the government, but without Nicolas. He sees them leaving, and runs out to meet them. Gaston tells him that it’s not worth taking him with them because “his time is up” and they don’t need useless things like him. Nicolas calls out to his, calling him father, rather than captain as he normally would, to which Gaston replies “don’t try to act human, monster,” and leaves.
Having heard the announcement on the radio that the troops were being dispatched, Wallace is relieved to find Nicolas still there. He tells him that he bought his freedom from Gaston, and not to worry because they can keep getting him Celebre from the doctor. Nicolas recovers, while Wallace’s father continues to abuse him. Things come to a head when on a particular incident Wallace suffers a terrible injury to his eye. Nicolas goes on a rampage, brutally murdering everyone in the mansion, starting with Wallace’s father. When Wallace catches up to him, he finds him with the dead bodies of Wallace’s (foster) mother and half-brother. Nicolas then makes to take his own life, but Wallace slaps the sword out of his hands, yelling at him for trying to do that and for what he’s done. The two flee then, ending up in Ergastulum, the designated city for Twilight to live in. Additionally, it’s become a haven for all sorts of criminal activity. Wallace takes on the assumed name Worick to hide his identity. While they generally grew up as petty criminals, they were taken under wing somewhat by a police officer, Chad Atkins. Additionally, at some point, they worked as members of the Monroe mafia family, particularly for Daniel Monroe, known for using his power to help make life easier for twilights. Presumably after leaving the Monroe family, the two picked up their current job, working as “handymen” of sorts, doing all sorts of odd jobs. These range from relatively mundane things like fixing a damaged shop building and finding a lost cat, to assignments in relation to the various mob families and gangs in the city. In particular with these sorts of cases, Chad often makes use of the two in cases where his hands are tied by police protocol.
Previously, Nic lived in Holly Heights from roughly March to August 2013. He spent most of it accidentally befriending nice children, working at Triggerfingers, and ocassionally getting into unnecessary fights.
Appearance: complete with his usual near constant state of injury.
Personality:
Nic is not the friendliest guy you’ll ever meet. Or the nicest. Or the politest. In fact at first blush he’s kind of a jerk. He likes to tease people, whether he’s just met them or known them for 20 years. When he’s not teasing, however; he’s pretty reserved. The reasons for this are twofold. It is mostly due to the fact that it’s difficult for him to communicate with other people, as most people don’t know sign language and he is generally disinclined to speaking. However it does also owe some credit to his general attitude towards other people. As a twilight, Nic has had to deal with prejudice at hate from strangers his whole life, and as such has been conditioned to expect nothing positive from any interaction. His time in Holly Heights, where the stigma of being a “tag” doesn’t exist, did soften this somewhat, but old habits die hard. Nicolas is reluctant to admit caring for anyone, though it will often show more through his actions. Take for example Nina, young nurse at the nearby clinic and frequent visitor of Nic and Worick. Nina seems to have a pretty solid understanding of Nicolas and enjoys his company, despite him frequently doing things like bopping her on the head or honking her nose. Really, this seems to be his way of showing affection, he seems perfectly fine walking with her holding his hand; while it’s not incredibly overt, it’s evident he feels comfortable with her. Though he routinely denied being her friend, he exhibited a similar amount of his rough physical affection with Maka in Holly Heights. (No hand holding because Maka is a big girl.)
Nic operates on an odd combination of tremendous immaturity and a fierce paternal streak. He is often needlessly snarky, with friends and strangers alike. Some might suggest that it is a defense mechanism, but he honestly seems to enjoy getting a rise out of people. He has plenty of actual walls that he puts up to keep people out. While he by no means is as fluently disingenuous as his partner, Nicolas is skilled at telling half-truths and avoiding questions when it suits him. Both men will flatly avoid talking about their pasts, and Nic generally will not lay any of his cards on the table if he can avoid it. In his months living in Holly Heights, Maka, Hiruma, and Chuck were the only ones who fully knew what his condition entails, and Chuck was only out of necessity when he had Nic’s body during an event. Despite this, Nic does seem to enjoy the company of people he feels comfortable with. While Worick is overtly friendly, it’s empty and meaningless, whereas Nic covers his soft squishy feelings with stubborn obnoxiousness. He seems to have a particular soft spot for kids, though he will summarily deny it.
That isn’t to say that Nic’s rough exterior is all an act. He’s been fighting his whole life and honestly enjoys it. He’s glad when he finds someone who can fight at his level, and has a bad habit of overdosing on Celebre in order to fight stronger opponents. He is a stubborn, abrasive person who is always more than willing to resort to violence, regardless of who the individual might be. He is set in his ways and has no intention to try to change for anyone else. He is perfectly capable of “turning off” his biting temperament, but does so rarely and it is generally reserved for dealing with kids. For everyone else, anyone he cares for will see fleeting glimpses of Nic’s true nature every now and again. Even Alex, whose relationship with Nicolas is the only one that can even rival the tempestuousness of his friendship with Worick. Outwardly he acts very opposed to her presence, yet willingly tolerates her longer than anticipated time of living with them. When Alex took on a job for the Handymen to find a lost cat, Nic ended up being the one to actually find it, but let Alex take the credit because she’d spent all day trying to find it. Though he is rough around the edges, with a combative attitude and questionable morals, Nicolas manages to endear himself to people who can see that when it comes down to it, he can't bring himself to be a completely bad person.
Abilities: As a twlight, Nic is innately stronger and faster than most people. However a great deal of his physical ability comes from his own training. He’s very adept with a katana (Which dear sweet Maka has hopefully held onto for him), but is completely capable of fighting with his fists as well. His only other skill worth noting is his impressive eyesight, which he developed mainly to compensate for his deafness.
Other: He is profoundly deaf, and has been since birth. Nic is fluent in sign language (ASL in the case of Holly Heights, to go with everything being translated to English; it’s never stated which country Gangsta takes place in, JSL is used simply due to the manga’s country of origin.) and can read lips. He can in fact speak, but generally chooses not to if he can help it, because he finds it tiring. Otherwise he’s just as physically capable (if not more) than anyone else.
ALSO just to clarify, since his condition is not so much an illness as it is a drug dependency, it was not “cured” when he came to Holly Heights, and Nicolas receives his Celebre from the landlord.

[The video feed flickers on to a rather surly looking man. There’s a bruise on his face and a bandage on his neck but he does not seem particularly bothered by them. I don’t know how long it’s been since I was last here, but given that it was summer the last I remember, I’m guessing it’s been a while.
